The Riverbend Park meadow (Fairfax County) was active with migrants this
Sunday morning after several slow mornings. The highlight was a Black-billed
Cuckoo in the NW corner of the meadow where Jeffery Rd. turns right toward the
nature center.
At least 11 species of warblers were present mostly along the woods bordering
Jeffery Rd but also scattered in trees in the southeasterly section of the
meadow. Magnolias were the most prevalent (10 or more) following by
Chestnut-sided. Others in smaller numbers were Tennessee, Nashville, Parula,
Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Black-and-White, American Redstart,
Common
Yellowthroat, and one Canada.
Other sightings of migratory species included at least 6 R-B Grosbeaks,
several Scarlet Tanagers, several Empidonax, Eastern Wood-Pewees, Red-eyed
Vireos,
House Wrens, Indigo Buntings, a Swanson's Thrush and a Baltimore Oriole.
Noticeable absent this morning were R-T Hummingbirds and Y-B Cuckoos which a
week
ago were readily seen and/or heard.
