Today at the Sewage Treatment Plant in
Roanoke I happened upon what appeared to
be an immature Spotted Sandpiper, half grown
but still downy. It disappeared into some growth
before I had time to study it well.
There are few records of Spotted Sandpiper
nesting in this locale to my knowledge, so confirmation
of this sighting is requested. There are at least 4
adults at this location, another surprise for me as
I thought they would be further north at this time
of year.
I found the bird in the middle of the three holding
ponds running parallel to the river, on the side closest
to the river. It is unknown if the bird is able to fly
but I would think it could. Scoping from a distance
would probably yield better results than walking the edges.
Please let me know off list if anyone relocates the bird.
