All - I wandered around various farm roads in Rockbridge County near Brownsburg
this morning looking for open field species. I started on Hyde Rd and it was
pretty birdy. I heard/saw along Hyde Rd - Grasshopper Sparrows, Barn Swallows,
Bluebirds, Mourning Doves (lots), Grackles, Starlings, Eastern Kingbirds
(several pairs), Orchard Orioles, Warbling Vireos, Brown Thrashers, Red-headed
Woodpeckers (2), Yellow-billed Cuckoo (3 chasing each other), Red-winged
Blackbirds, Red-tailed Hawk, Eastern Meadowlarks (many), Field Sparrows,
Northern Mockingbirds, and probably a few others. I then drove north of
Brownsburg and went down New Providence Rd along Bellevue, and then McElwee. I
saw/heard most of the same birds I found on Hyde Rd, but in addition there was
a Kestrel and a Blue Grosbeak (one of my targets for the day).
Overall, it was a good day to wander back roads and bird. I've posted some
photos on Flickr, if you're interested.
