Raptor Observations:
Quite a busy day today for counters, observers and visitors! A huge
Broad-wing flight with a big push at the end of the day. Hourly Broad-wing
counts: 319 (8-9am), 612 (9-10am), 1044 (10-11am), 1091 (11-12pm), 282
(12-1pm), 948 (1-2pm), 1158 (2-3pm), 429 (3-4pm), 2263 (4-5pm), 916
(5-5:30pm). The morning Broad-wings were mostly to the west, the mid-day
birds were more overhead, the afternoon birds were distant to the east, and
then the late birds were just to our north. Hundreds of Broad-wings were
dropping down into the forest just to our north at the end of the day,
which should bring a nice lift-off in the morning. 27 Bald Eagles (23 AD, 1
2Y, 1 imm, 2 unaged). Two adult Golden Eagles (1:47pm and 2:25pm).
Non-raptor Observations:
80 Monarchs. 7 hummingbird, 24 Chimney Swift, 21 Red-headed Woodpecker, 85
Tree Swallow, 2 Purple Finch, 635 Grackle, 6 Tennessee Warbler, 8 Cape May
Warbler, 1 Blackpoll Warbler, 6 Scarlet Tanager, 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak.
