Report from Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch, Waynesboro, VA - August 26, 2003
I was on board from 5:45 - 8 p.m. (EDST) There was a steady flow of
Chimney Swift with over 1500 counted, ALL heading east to west through and
over the gap compared to 3 Barn Swallow heading south.
Common Nighthawk are beginning to trickle through with 59 counted. If
weather holds it's quite possible we may have a spectacular flight to match
last year's record-breaking Common Nighthawk migration when thousands
passed over. I hope to make it up each night this week through the
weekend, weather permitting.
The Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch is now in its 27th fall season. It 's held on
the grounds of the Inn at Afton, located on the southern side of Rockfish
Gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains, just above where I-64 (exit 99) intersects
with the southern end of the Skyline Drive and the northern end of the Blue
Ridge Parkway, just east of Waynesboro, VA and approximately 22 miles west
of Charlottesville, VA.
The hawk watch is run by volunteer counters and is supported by three area
bird clubs Augusta, Monticello and Rockingham Bird Clubs.
Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch needs YOU! We are actively recruiting volunteer
counters from the immediate area. We will be offering introductory
workshops to be held at the site this SEASON 2003. The first hour will
include a Power Point presentation. The second hour will be devoted to hawk
watching and additional hawk identification tips. Participants will be
required to sign up as a co-counter that can involve as little as two full
days (four 4-hour blocks), working alongside more experienced hawk watchers.
First workshop will be held Saturday, August 30 from 9 - 11 a.m.
