Today's RBC Hillandale Park morning walk turned up a great mix of birds
including 14 warbler species, Scarlet Tanagers, and a Red-headed Woodpecker
(heard calling from the adjacent golf course.) Tom Mizell is our
much-appreciated Hillandale Walk leader; his preliminary report is of the
following warblers:
Wilson's
Blue-winged
Cerulean, male (seldom seen/reported in the City)
Black-throated Blue
Black-throated Green
Common Yellowthroat
Nashville
Magnolia
Northern Waterthrush
Ovenbird
Black-and-white
Palm
Northern Parula
Yellow-rumped
Many of these were singing. It was a real treat to hear both the Magnolia and
the Wilson's choruses with the birds in good view.
Hillandale is a Harrisonburg City Park. It has wonderfully varied habitat that
includes mature woods; small creek; lawn; brushy edge-habitat; and natural open
fields (interspersed with occasional cedars and deciduous trees) that have
occasionally hosted migrating YB Chat and Prairie Warbler. Club walks are
held monthly on varying dates.
