Saturday 5/2 Greg Moyers, Dave Wendelken and I visited Shenandoah National Park
and found Cerulean and Kentucky Warblers had returned. No Canadas or
Chestnut-sided found; maybe next week for those. A pair of Yellow-throated
Vireos appeared to be nest-building at Pocosin, just beyond the cabin. Lots of
A. Redstarts, and multiple Least Flycatchers calling. Two Veery. We entered
at Swift Run Gap, Rt. 33 East of Elkton, and ranged between High Top Mt.
parking (south of Swift Run Gap) north to Pocosin Fire Road. At Pocosin, a
Cerulean gave us a break from the species’ usual tree-top, neck-breaking views,
dropping in quite low. (As did one today at Switzer –)
Today, 5/3, Greg Moyers and I ventured out Rt. 33 west of Harrisonburg to the
Switzer Dam area of Shenandoah Mountain. Thirteen warbler species found.
Cerulean Warbler at the higher elevations. Blackburnian, Pine, Worm-eating,
Hooded, BT Green, BT Blue, and Black-and-white Warblers; plus Ovenbird, A.
Redstart, N. Parula, and Louisiana Waterthrush. Also found Acadian
Flycatchers, a Broad-winged Hawk, and one C. Loon on the lake.
In Paul State Forest (west of Dayton) this afternoon, we found several Wood
Thrushes and a low–foraging male Black-throated Blue Warbler. At the Nazarene
Church Road Wetland, we heard both the continuing Sora and Virginia Rail.
