Following up on the report of yesterday of a Ross's Goose along
Langhorne Road in southern Albemarle County, found by Perri
Borowiecki, Todd Day and Mike Stinson, and put on Monticello Bird
Alert by amarumayo, I went to the area this morning. I arrived there
around 7:30 AM and immediately found a flock of Canada Goose with one
white goose intermixed. The flock was in a field of short winter rye,
to the north and east of 8371 Langhorne Road. The white goose seemed
to be a few inches smaller than the Canada Geese. With a scope I
could not discern a dark margin along the mandibular line. Also, the
bill looked smaller than that of a Snow Goose. I took a few photos
but only one was halfway decent, as I some 120 yards from the flock.
There is a small rise in this field, and the flock may walk behind
it. This appears to be a first record for Ross's Goose in Albemarle
County. Stauffer Miller
