Yesterday on my way to work I had a quite a surprise as I was getting on the
beltway (and I'm sure the guy behind me on the ramp was a bit surprised as
well!).
I was going from Braddock Road inside the beltway (North Springfield
neighborhod) onto the inner loop of the beltway (headed north toward 236).
As I got near the middle of the ramp I saw a flock of birds fly over the
tree tops (about 6-8 birds all told). I slowed way down and stared out my
windshield, as they looked very odd. They were white like sea gulls but had
black wing tips. And instead of nice long wings, like a seagull, both the
body and the wings were kind of short and stubby. It wasn't until last
night when I finally got home that I could double check my Sibley's and
realized that what I had seen was a flock of either Ross's or Snow geese
flying south inside the beltway. Needless to say the with the 30 second
view I had of them before they disappered south (and the guy behind me lost
it) I have no way of telling which goose it was - but my view matched
exactly the flying view in Sibley for the mature Ross's or Snow.
I can only hope they might be headed to Lake Accotink which isn't that far
away, as the goose flys. If anyone goes over that way - keep an eye out.
