While walking near our home this afternoon Karen & I re-located the
Rough-Legged Hawk that we saw on Jan. 4 while birding our sector for the Calmes
Neck CBC.
It was perched in a tree alongside a stream that flows through a pasture
(w/four horses) that is approx. 40 to 60 acres. While it was not flying it
kept turning its head as if it was watching for prey in the high grass around
the tree.
To locate this pasture, go south from Snickersville Tpk, Rt. 734 on Yellow
Schoolhouse Rd, Rt. 831. Immed. after you pass Hollow Oak Rd on your right you
will pass an old farm house. About a 100 yards after the house the pasture
begins on the right (west side of Yellow Schoolhouse Rd). In this area the
stream flows through the center of the pasture - the bird was perched next to
the stream in the northernmost area of the stream. The stream crosses out of
the pasture & flows under Yellow Schoolhouse Rd on it southeastern corner (this
is the area where we saw the Rough-legged last week).
This evening I will have to look for the Short-eared Owls along Ebenezer Church
Rd.
