Florence Hix, who lives in Pamplin (Appomattox County) reported a
"golden" hummingbird at her feeder on July 23. She sent me a picture of
the bird and I thought that it looked like an adult male Rufous
Hummingbird. I sent the photo to Bob Sargent who confirmed the
identification. I believe that this may be the first July record for
this species in Virginia. She intends to watch the feeder and if the
bird is a reliable visitor, Bob Sargent intends to come and try to band
it. I have a photo if and anyone would like to see it, just contact me
off-line.
