Bruce Peterjohn captured a female Rufous Hummingbird that is visiting a
feeder in Amherst County on November 4. It had been banded in that yard
by Sue Heath on December 2, 2006. The bird had originally appeared at
the feeder in October of 2006, was banded on December 2, and was last
seen on April 4, 2007. A banded hummingbird returned to the feeder on
October 12, 2007 and was captured on November 4, 2007. A second Rufous
Hummingbird is also present in the Lynchburg area. This bird appears
to be a female Rufous Hummingbird. It is visiting a feeder on Chickasaw
Drive, the site where a female Rufous Hummingbird was banded by Sue Heath
on December 2, 2006. (Last year on December 2nd Sue had a busy day in
our area!) Although we have tried to determine whether this bird is
banded, we simply can not tell.
