I stopped by the Ripley Garden at noon for about 10 minutes; the Rufous was
not present, but the Ovenbird made another appearance. I noted that the
hummingbird feeder in the Willow tree is completely empty, indicating it
probably has a large leak. Jim is out until the 5th; I will bring in more
solution tomorrow to replenish the feeders. The feeder by the light
appears to be fine.
I walked on to the Botanic garden, but alas, many person's relatives are
apparently still in town, as there was a line to get in (not like when the
Arum was on display, but still!) I didn't feel like fighting the crowds
and strollers, so I went across the street to Bartholdi park. If the
Rufous is interested in pansies (as indicated by the person who saw one on
13th street), she would have a wide choice here: the entire bed around the
large fountain is planted with pansies. As for other flowers, there are a
FEW scattered blooms in the rock garden area, which may or may not be
nectar plants.
When I returned to Ripley at 12:50, the Rufous was there, using the feeder
in the Silver Bell tree before an appreciative audience of a large but
well-behaved group of kids (whether an organized group or large family, I
don't know). Happy birding to all!
