*************************** Announcement *************************
This Spring Shenandoah National Park is partnering with the Audubon Society
and local naturalist groups to monitor Cerulean Warblers and a few other target
species in the Park. Cerulean warblers are a species of continental concern and
their numbers are declining throughout most of their range. Volunteers will be
conducting walking transect surveys (2-kilometer) along pre-defined trails and
fire roads in the park. Volunteers will detect warblers by visual(binoculars)
and audible means and record data on forms and in GPS units.
The surveys will be conducted from May 16, 2009 through June 21, 2009 during
the early morning hours. Volunteers may work alone or in pairs and will be
signed up with the parks Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP program. We are planning two
informational / training meetings -
one on May, 5th in Charlottesville (Ivy Creek Nature Center),
and the other on May 13th (6PM-9PM) in Luray at SNP Park Headquarters).
