A quick note - I was letting our dogs out this morning at our house on ridge
road, and clearly heard a Sandhill crane. The sound was unmistakeable. I
believe there is a captive crane on the north end of the island, but that is a
long way from our house and I've never heard one from our house before.
After getting our act together, My brother and i went out to Assateague, where
we ran into Jeffrey Blalock. He had seen the Sandhill Crane flying and was
able to get a picture (which I think he will post later). He saw it from where
the old bridge was located on Main Street- which is consistent with where I
heard it coming from. I don't believe the captive bird can fly - so this
appears to be a wild crane!
Most of the other notables are still present - the Black tailed godwit was seen
yesterday, the avocet - this morning, piping and semi-palmated plovers are
back. I have not seen the black-headed gull or the Eurasian widgon - but we've
only been here since Sunday.
