I had planned to spend some time at Occoquan Bay this morning before seeing
yesterday's report of a Sandhill Crane. Several other birders were there and
it took the frosty fog a while to burn off. None that I spoke to saw any
sign of the bird, but it was a beautiful day to be birding anyway. Birds
were quite active, especially early. Highlights were 7 Horned Grebes in the
cove near the gazebo viewing area (but I did not see a single Pie-billed)
and 2 Hermit Thrushes. A pair of Ring-necked Ducks in the same area was the
waterfowl highlight. Sparrows, both Kinglets, RW Blackbirds, Grackles,
Yellow-rumped Warblers were the most active and abundant (besides Cormorants
& Coots). At least 3 Palm Warblers are still hanging out not far from the
parking lot.
