I don't know if this picture will help, but here is a picture of the two
birds side by side in the water.

This is the picture that made me think they were not both Lesser Scaup.
They are in similar positions relative to me, so the lighting on each
bird is approximately the same.
The head shapes look different.
The color of their heads seem different.
There is more white on the bird on the right.
So those are the things that made me think they might not both be Lesser
Scaup.

I did a posting yesterday about my Saturday visit to Huntley Meadows and
mentioned that I saw my first Lesser Scaup.
Well, I was looking at my photos of what I originally thought were two
Lesser Scaup and I noticed that the second bird looked different than
the first. After looking over several different shots, I'm pretty
convinced that the second bird was actually a Greater Scaup.
But I know there are many of you on the list with field experience with
both Lesser and Greater.
I'd like to know what you think - please send me your opinions off-list
and I'll post a summary of the opinions I receive.
Here are the two pictures (I sure wish I'd been able to get closer and
get some better shots of them)

If you go to one link and then the other in the same browser you can use
your forward and back buttons in the browser to switch between the two
pictures to see the differences.
