OK, let's try this a different way. Complete checklist for Shen. River SP is
below.
I thought I'd check out Shenandoah River State Park this weekend. I'll be
staying there next weekend but I may not have a lot of time for birding.
The weather was certainly strange.
Good variety of birds, esp. sparrows. My best birds were Yellow Palm Warbler,
Catbird and Osprey.
Take care,

Comments:
Birded parts of park today. Weird winter weather in Northeast and Mid-Atlantic
in late Oct.
Drove
Daughter of the Stars Drive (entrance road) to Visitor Center. Then
drove to the southernmost parking lot along river. Walked picnic area
along river, Cottonwood Trail to campground and back to parking area.
Drove to Visitor Center again. Then drove to Culler's Overlook. Walked
Campground Trail to RV camp area. Then walked River Trail to Culler's
Trail, beginning of White Oak Loop, then backtracked on this latter
trail, returned to Culler's Overlook Trail, walked all of the cabins
area, Overnight Road to Daughter of the Stars Drive to Culler's
Overlook. Then drove on DOTS Dr. and left the park.
Walked 4.3 miles. Drove 2 miles, not counting the area along road that I
walked.
Weather
- Freaky weather. 1 inch snow cover upon arrival. 3 or 4 inches fell
by 2pm. Then changed to mist, then rain/snow at 4:30. Breeze.
Extra
surface area on the trees because many leaves haven't fallen (a little
past peak color). As a result, many branches broke under the weight of
the heavy, wet snow.
Mammals - E. Gray Squirrel, 2. E. Cottontail, 1.
Flowers that I could see - Cespitose Smartweed, Wingstem (almost all past
bloom), Chickory.Sat Oct 29, 2011 09:35 AM Species
