There's a great article in the VSO's recent RAVEN journal..."Trends in
Shorebird Abundance, Distribution and Chronology on Chincoteague National
Wildlife Refuge," by Buffa, Laskowski, Morris and Holcomb. There is lots of
data and much discussion, as well as a number of important comparisons to the
pioneering work there by Claudia Wilds, showing how things have changed over
decades. Ned Brinkley edited Claudia's extensive notes and reports into a book,
which was published as several hundred copies in 2007 by Coastal Virginia
Wildlife Observatory, entitled "Shorebirds at Chincoteague: Patterns of
Migration on the Virginia Coast." These reports are essential in helping
provide data for conservation management.
