Greetings all,
Tonight Todd Day and I went to Harrison Road in Fauquier County in search of
waterfowl and Short-eared Owls. We were not disappointed. On the pond were over
two hundred Ring-necked Ducks, eighteen Bufflehead, ten Gadwall, six American
Black Duck, twelve Mallard, and a lone American Coot. We estimated a thousand
Canada Geese and two adult Bald Eagles over head.
As the sun set we turned our attention to the field on the west side of
Harrison Road to look for Short-eared Owls. Last year SEOW were fairly reliable
at this field, with my high count being seven seen at once. Tonight we had one
SEOW sitting on a fence post mid-field about fifteen minutes after sunset. (The
sun set in Warrenton at 4:54 pm). The bird took off and we lost sight of it on
the far west side of the field.
