After combing the fields in Nokesville for four days looking for Longspurs
and Buntings, I finally found some in a flock of 85+ Horned Larks along
Parkgate
Dr. (Rt. 653), off of Aden Rd. (Rt. 646), at the western end. They were in
the field, just east of 12408 Parkgate, on the north side. Fortunately for me,
the birds were foraging closer to the road, so I had wonderful looks. After
counting 6 Longspurs, I came upon the Snow Bunting, and was quite elated, as
I've
been wanting one for Prince William Co.! As soon as I saw the wide white wing
patches, I was thrilled. I think there might have been a second Snow Bunting,
but a truck came along and scattered the flock. If you don't see the flock
right away, scan the huge fields as they're probably out there somewhere. Just
have patience!
Between those fields and the fields at 11904 Parkgate, you might come across
a huge Canada Goose flock that might still hold two imm. Snow Geese. The
Canadas were spread all over the fields this morning and I didn't have time to
scan
properly.
