Susan Hubbard, Margaret Mitchell and I went to Craney Island this afternoon
in search of the Lapland Longspurs and Snow Buntings, seen there last week. No
Longspurs in sight, but we did find a flock of about 25 Snow Buntings in the
same general area as the other two groups were seen. They were in the grassy
area between the north perimeter road and the side of the embankment, about 2
p.m. They did not fly about as much as the Longspurs, and we might have
overlooked them if we hadn't stopped to look at a Killdeer closer to the road,
then
spotted them in the background. Later they came out quite close to the road,
giving us great looks.
Another highlight of the day was a lone male Common Goldeneye, in breeding
plumage, close to shore, about halfway down the east perimeter road.
Other waterfowl included Red-breasted Mergansers, Ruddy Ducks, Buffleheads,
American Widgeon, Surf Scoters and Horned Grebes.
