Hey all, was able to take advantage of the near perfect conditions last night
and run a nightjar survey following the Newsoms BBS route in Southampton Co.,
looping through the countryside just east of the town of Boykins. I started
around 3am and recorded 6 Chuck-wills-widows on the route, with birds calling
from 4 of the 10 stops. Finished up well before dawn so headed over to Steel
Bridge Rd., route 624, located in southeastern Greensville Co. to try for
Kentucky Warbler per the recent successful report from Frank Enders. Heard a
Kentucky sing a few times before becoming quiet around 7 am, this was about a
mile north of the bridge crossing. Otherwise good numbers of the expected
breeders, although a couple of Am. Redstarts surprised me a bit, I will post
the list below. Finally, on my way out near the bridge crossing of route 730
over the Meherrin River I thought I heard a possible Swainson's Warbler, but
with only one functional window in the truck I stopped to get a better listen
and the bird never sang again. Excuses excuses, but if anyone is down that way
may be worth a check. All the best,
Nick Flanders.
Newport News.
