Thursday of this week I drove to my go-to sparrow habitat. Located on Toll
Gate Road (S.R. 658) less than 2 miles from my home there is an old abandoned
cow lot with a large brush pile near a small stream which creates a sparrow
haven. Even before I exited my car, I was able to see with my naked eye white
crowned sparrows flitting about in large numbers. In about an hour I was able
to see white crowned both mature and immature, white throats, juncos, chipping,
song and 1 vesper sparrow. Also present were house finches, Carolina wrens,
blue birds, yellow rumps, towhee and phoebes. The woodpecker count included
downy, red bellied and pileated. Actually, there were so many birds in the
area, one person could not begin to inspect them closely enough.
A beautiful morning after a rainy day previously. Making the circuit back home
by Booth Road (S.R. 657) I spotted a kestrel, black vultures, robins and of
course hoards of crows.
