A long walk behind my property near Purcellville in western Loudoun Co. early
this morning was as delightful a birthday present as I could ever want.
Rambling through fields, along the creek, and beside pine woods in an area that
I haven't had access to before, I came across a colony of Red-Headed
Woodpeckers, at least 5, in a stand of large sycamores. They were yelling
their heads off and harrassing each other. I heard a Wild Turkey gobbling and
a couple of Barred Owls hooting before the sun came up. I saw what may be my
last Brown Creeper of the spring, and firsts of the spring for me were several
Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers, Chimney Swifts, and 2 White-Eyed Vireos. Ruby-Crowned
Kinglets were everywhere, but Juncos were nearly absent. Deer flashed their
white tails at me, at least 10 in my slow walk of 2 hours.
Ahh, the glories of spring!
