This morning I visited Staunton View Park in Mecklenburg/Charlotte Co. There's
lots of birds there with the highlights being 15 LITTLE BLUE HERONS (all
juveniles), 21 WHITE IBIS (all juveniles) and a single SNOWY EGRET which I
believe was an adult as it was still retaining plumes on the head, neck and
back. To see all of these birds well, I had to walk a ways north along the
shoreline. The river's pretty low and it's an easy walk but very muddy in spots
so wellies come in handy. The most numerous shorebird species besides KILLDEER
was PECTORAL SANDPIPER. I estimated a count of 75 but there were surely more,
presenting themselves as distant silhouettes. Other shorebird species included
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, SPOTTED, SOLITARY, SEMIPALMATED and LEAST SANDPIPERS, both
YELLOWLEGS and a distant DOWITCHER sp. Links to a full list and a photo below.
Good birding.
