This morning around 9:00 a.m. while birding in the Stonewall area of
Appomattox county, I was driving along S. R. 611 when I saw what I thought were
a couple of mourning doves walking down the road ahead of me. As I slowed
down and passed them I realized what I was seeing was an adult woodcock and
two half grown chicks just strolling down the road. This was on a rather
high hill with pasture on one side and trees on the other with no wet ground
around as far as I know. I was shocked and delighted to see them and
they did not leave the road as I passed, just kept on walking.
