Headed to Huntley yesterday (I apologize for the late report - had hoped to get
this out there in advance of the Monday Morning Huntley bird walk) and birded
from 2pm-4:30pm. 6/7 woodpeckers was def. the highlight. Other minor highlights
below!
- At least 3 red-headed woodpeckers (all seen prior to the boardwalk,
including one which went to a woodpecker hole, but not into it - before marker
3 on the right of the path (heading towards the marsh). The hole was easiest to
see if you start at marker 3 and walk back towards the visitor's center, about
20 steps on the your left then.) They were quite vocal, at least one was
immature and one was an adult.
- 2 hairy woodpeckers
- 1 downy
- 1 pileated
- several red-bellied
- 1 flicker (heard only)
- 1 phoebe (in the tree behind the observation tower)
- 3 northern shovelers
- Your standard birds like red-winged blackbirds, carolina wren, chickadee,
titmouse, song sparrow, white throated sparrows (out in force), cardinal,
doves, herons...
