I dropped by Sunrise Valley Park in Reston yesterday and today. I'm not
sure who is now responsible for maintaining the park, but it is looking
very nice. The paths have been mowed, trimmed and are mostly covered
with a fresh layer of mulch. In fact a lawn service was putting down
mulch on some parts of the path today.
It is very birdy in the park. Lots of juvenile birds around, I saw
juveniles of all the following species: Red-winged blackbirds, Eastern
Towhees, American Robins, Brown Thrashers.
Today I was thrilled to find a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk. I first
spotted it on the far edge of the pond on the ground. I could not tell
what it had caught there. Then it flew up into a tree along the edge of
the pond just ten or so feet above the water. I went back to my car and
got my scope and camera. The hawk flew a couple times, but stayed in
the same general area just moving to different trees.
Here's one of the shots I got of the bird:

There was also a Great Egret in the pond today. Last night the Great
Egret was in one of the trees along the shore of the pond.
