Hola,
This afternoon at about 5:30, I stopped by a pond on Belvoir Road (Route
709), near The Plains, in Fauquier County. This spot is easily found by
typing "Belvoir Road Fauquier" into Google Maps, and the pond is marked
"Bowmans Pond." There was a raft of about fifty ducks in the middle of the
pond,
and among them were three Scoters, two of them drake Surf Scoters. The
third Scoter was likely a hen Surf Scoter, but they were distant, and its head
remained tucked the entire time I watched it and the water was a bit
choppy.
I presume there are records for Surf Scoter in Fauquier County, but they
were the first scoters for me in the county.
The rest of the ducks consisted of 2 Ruddy Ducks, 26 Ring-neckeds, 10
Buffle Head, and 13 American Wigeon.
Cheers,
Todd
