After an uneventful morning at Craney Island, (where the only birds of note
were 8 Pectoral Sandpiper, 10 Short-billed Dowitcher, and 1 Glossy Ibis all in
the grassy along the perimeter road at the northeast corner) I decided to stop
by Gloucester Point to look again (my third trip here this summer) for
Swallow-tailed Kites. After 3 hrs searching, I observed a single adult
Swallow-tailed Kite soaring and then diving behind trees behind the Gloucester
Crossing shopping center off Rt 17 north. This is the same area where Joyce
Williams has been seeing kites of and on for the past three years. If you go
looking for the bird, please take note that this was my third search in this
area this summer (total search time about 14 hours). This was a state bird for
me and #287 on the Big Year List.
Good Birding,
