After the antenna was observed attached to the back of one of the
Swallow-tailed Kites in Campbell County, I began looking online for someone who
was conducting research on this species using radio tagging and found the name
of Dr. Ken Meyer from Avian Research and Conservation. I forwarded the photos
taken and posted to the ListServe yesterday (August 18) by Larry Meade to Ken
Meyer. Of course, he was very interested in this sighting and replied both to
me and Larry Meade confirming that the antenna had been placed on the bird by
his team. The Campbell County Swallow-tailed Kite may be one of the ten
nestlings that were tagged this year on the Coastal Plain of South Carolina or
it may be an older bird that had been tagged in a previous year. As we hear
more from Ken Meyer on this topic, I’ll post any information to the ListServe.
