Hi all,
I just returned from Strickley Rd where I ran into Marshall Faintich. Soon
after I arrived Marshall picked up on a group of Horned Larks and with them, 1
basic-plumaged (I'm not sure if it was a female or a non-breeding male) Lapland
Longspur. I briefly spotted the adult male Lapland Longspur in breeding
plumage, but unfortunately, the group quickly took flight and Marshall was not
able to get on it. A gorgeous bird! Later, I found myself looking at two
basic-plumaged Longspurs in my scope, so there were at least three total.
The exact location is along Strickley Rd just west (toward Rockfish Rd) of the
dairy farm on Custard Ln that William was describing. The Larks and Longspurs
were along the south side of the road (the side of the dairy farm). There was
also a flock of about 15 Pipits that were present when we arrived but flew off
after a short while.
Good luck,
Gabriel Mapel

Yes you are correct. Strickley road is south of Grottoes. Not sure exactly
where the current sightings were but in Dec the Longspurs were seen in the
fields near a large dairy farm where there is a significant 90 degree bend in
the road. Hopefully somebody with more knowledge of the area will provide more
details.

After work I stopped by Lake Shenandoah and found a Common Loon along with
53+ RN Ducks, a Scaup spp., Horned Grebe, Ruddy Ducks, and a NRW Swallow.
I then went to Strickley Rd and found at least two Lapland Longspurs in a
small flock of Horned Larks along with a single Am. Pipit. One of the
Lapland Longspurs was in breeding plumage - a first for me.
