Thanks once again to the Bristol Bird Club for organizing and hosting our joint
annual meeting with the Tennessee Ornithological Society. The scientific
presentations were excellent and informative, and the field trips yielded some
outstanding views of eastern Tennessee's wonderful birds. It was a pleasure to
engage with the TOS, and we hope to join them for other activities in the
future.
The VSO's Board of Directors thanks Shirley Devan and Susan Brown for their
three years of service, and welcomes new Board members Joelle Buffa and Russell
Taylor. Keith Carson will continue his service with second 3-yr term, and Mike
Lott will complete Tiffany Corsello's term. We also thank Tiffany for her work
on behalf of the VSO.
Here are this year's VSO Award winners:
Eike Service Award: Dr. Wesley Brown
Abbott Conservation Award: Stephen Eccles
Byrd Scientific Achievement Award: Dr. Bryan Watts
The following students received $1,000 J.J. Murray Awards to support their
research (thanks again to the Northern Neck Audubon Society for providing a
second award):
Courtney Turrin, College of William and Mary: "Negative Feedback Effects of
Population Saturation in Bald Eagles in the Chesapeake Bay".
Dustin Reichard, Indiana University: "Investigating the production and
function of low-amplitude songs using microphone-transmitters." (study will be
conducted on Dark-eyed Juncos at the Mountain Lake Biological Research Station)
Our next Board activity will be the summer retreat on August 10-11 in Newport
News. Next year's Annual Meeting will be held in Leesburg on April 26-28.
Please see the Summer Issue of the VSO's Newsletter for a full writeup of this
