Following up on Phil Kenny's suggestion, posted earlier tonight on Va-bird,
I drove over to Tyson's Corner about 9, and was pleased to find 10, or so,
Common Nighthawks flying around and actively feeding in the lights over the
tower buildings. These were my first nighthawks for 2008; THANKS PHIL !!
All of the birds I was able to check in my binoculars were males, which is
never the case in the fall. This leads me to think that male Nighthawks
probably migrate earlier than the females, as do the males of many other
avian species.
Not a bad night for a day on which I also saw a gorgeous Bay-breasted
warbler, and a very nice Cape May warbler as well. Isn't Spring Wonderful?
