At noon today a rather tame Baird's Sandpiper gave killer looks for 45
minutes to Ken Ranck, his daughters, and myself at Leonard's Pond. It was in
the
southwestern corner of the pond next to the road. There are 2 previous records
for Rockingham County, both from October 1982. After the Rancks left I looked
over toward the opposite (eastern) side of the pond and to my delight the
Golden-Plover was back after a day's absence. There were a few more white
feathers in the large black patch still on its belly, otherwise it looked like
the
same bird. Brenda Tekin sent me a picture she took of this 2 days ago. It
shows the bird's wing extended from the top side, and it reveals a wing-stripe
more like that of the Eurasian Golden-Plover than the very minimal one on the
American Golden-Plover. Someone needs to see the underwing of this bird--it
would be gray in the American, white in the Eurasian. Brenda sent a copy to
Ned
Brinkley for his examination. Brenda, thanks for the picture; why don't you
put it on for everyone to see? Both birds were still present when I left about
12:40.
