While I was parking the car, Lewis Barnett was watching a thrush before
getting in his car. Turned out to be a Veery (life bird, thank you Lewis!).
It was very cooperative and did not even flee the three dogs that came out
of the woods and ran around. No singing, but a couple of days ago I thought
I might have heard just a snippet of veery song in that general area.
There were so many other birds singing at the time that I decided it must
have been other birdsongs overlapping at a distance and did not pursue it.
There was black-throated blue singing and a hairy WP excavating a dead tree
near the vireo sitting tight on her nest. Over by the pipeline there was a
vocal Acadian flycatcher, and I spooked a barred owl and a wood duck near
the trail. Over by the pond there was one barred owl hooting and another
one perched above that trail. It flew to the hidden owl and they proceeded
to have a very amusing conversation. Haven't even heard a kingfisher for
several days, but I do think the rising water stopped below the burrows.
