The past two mornings have been really good in our yard in Northern Loudoun
County. Yesterday we were surprised by a Red-headed Woodpecker visiting our
feeder. It was clear that this bird knew about the feeder as it flew straight
from the tree across the yard to the platform. This was unexpected since we
typically see Red-headed Woodpeckers only once or twice per year in the yard.
Later in the afternoon a juvenile (3rd year) Bald Eagle few over and a
Ruby-crowned Kinglet is still around.
This morning while waking up and drinking coffee a beautiful Red-breasted
Grosbeak (male) showed up at the feeder. Wow, nice start to the day. It got
even better when I walked out the door--Singing male Scarlet Tanager. Can't
wait for a nice walk tonight and see what pops ups.
Purple finches and Pine Siskins are still around. Yesterday I counted over 8
Purple Finches and about a dozen Pine Siskins. This morning the numbers were
lower but I did not spend a lot of time watching birds.
Strangely I have yet a see a warbler in the yard this year. Even the
Yellow-rumped Warblers have been elusive.
