Hello VA-Birders,
I have spent 4 of 5 mornings this week at Riverbend Park in Fairfax County, as
well as most mornings last week. Today the highlight was an active BROWN
THRASHER, but it was an incredibly slow migrant day. We have not had a
significant front move through in a while.
There were noticeable increases in numbers of several species, including
Catbirds, Bluebirds, Waxwings, Common Yellowthroats, and cowbirds, among
others. A COOPER'S HAWK has been present for at least a couple of days, adding
to the stress level of the meadow, as well as two or more very vocal
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS (imm) that give the Crows something to do. I have been
looking for Lincoln's Sparrows to show up but I noted none. The only sparrows
are a couple of SONG.
Warbler highlights have been lots of MAGNOLIA, several NASHVILLE, a couple of
TENNESSEE, and a WILSON'S, among a smattering of several other species. A
couple of BLACKPOLL WARBLERS flew overhead yesterday.
BOBOLINKS were "blinking" overhead last week, but I didn't hear any this week.
There was also a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO working the branches on Wednesday.
