Hello all
This morning Pat & I took the Martinka brothers on a birding tour of Augusta
County . Robert lives in Montana & the other one ( please forgive me I forgot
your name ) lives in Florida .They are here for the week visiting family in
Waynesboro . Any how we started off on the Blue Ridge Parkway & Rt. 610 in
hopes of finding a good number of Warbler Species . We bombed out the only
Warbler we found was 3 Hooded Warblers . But a good number of Red Eyed Vireo's
about 30 + & a few Blue Headed Vireo's -- 4 & the last high light 2 Black
Billed Cuckoo's. After Rt. 610 we headed over to Quillen's to check for
Shorebirds -- STRIKE TWO . We found 2 Great Blue Heron , 1 Great Egret , 1
Spotted Sandpiper as high lights . After that it was off to the Swoope area to
check on the Sedge Wrens . We did not see or hear them at all today . The last
time I heard them was on Thursday 26th of this month . It sounded to me a
single Wren was feeding only one young . I think Brenda Tekin's last set of
photos from the 21st & 22nd was an Adult with a possible fledged Sedge Wren .
We also struck out on the Shrike & Sparrows in the Swoope area . STRIKE THREE
We ended the morning with a tally of 50 species of birds . Some of the High
Lights are as follows .
Broad Winged Hawk -- Blue Ridge Parkway
No. Harrier -- 3 in Swoope
Red Tailed Hawk
Coopers
Kestrel
R T Hummingbird -- 9
Red Headed Woodpecker -- 1 imm. Swoope Rt. 707 dirt road
Wood Pewee -- 5
Scarlet Tanager -- 8 Parkway
Blue Grosbeak -- 2
This evening I birded the horse farm next to my house & hear is what I found .
Sorry guys but I found a couple of Warblers a Chestnut - sided & a Redstart .
Others were as follows .
Blue Gray Gnatcatcher -- 4
House Wren -- 2
Cat Bird -- 10
Brown Thrasher -- 4
Cardinal -- had about 10 birds but one was just fledged from the nest . This
bird still had a few pin fuzzy feathers on top of its head .
A good day of birding in Augusta County . You all have a great birding day .
