I made my first trip to Thompson WMA this morning, mainly on Trillium Trial and
Upper Ted. I managed to see one of my target birds, Kentucky Warbler, and heard
4-5 others, but was skunked on Cerulean Warblers, my other target bird.
However, a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher seen and heard a hundred yards down from
the Upper Ted parking lot was welcome compensation; my first in Virginia. The
mountainside was lousy with Acadian Flycatchers, American Redstarts and
Red-eyed Vireos. I saw 2 Hooded Warblers and heard two others. Also heard a
Ruffed Grouse drumming, and a Red-tailed hawk screeching. I also made a very
brief foray into Sky Meadows SP, but decided not to get tangled up with the
Strawberry Festival that was underway. With the traffic, it was possible to see
species that weren't on the mountaintops, like a Blue Grosbeak at the parking
lot of the Bridle Trail.
