The Sand-Plover that was reported in Staunton, VA in September 2009 has been
reviewed by VARCOM, and after much deliberation, the Committee has decided to
accept it as Sand-Plover sp. (Greater/Lesser Sand-Plover). This was probably
the most difficult report that the Committee has reviewed, which in part
explains the delay in coming to the decision.
Thanks to Allen Larner for first alerting birders through the list serve, that
enabled many of us, including myself, to see the bird during its brief visit.
Special thanks also go to the Committee Members who spent a considerable amount
of time reviewing photographs, field guides, and international expert opinion
in making the decision.
