The Fairfax City ravens nest inside a human structure with human activity
all around them. It is a light industrial area and while watching them add
nest material to last year's nest in November 2018, we saw them fly from
shoulder height or just above the heads of 12-18 people working in the open
area in front of the large open door leading to the nest, plus beeping
backhoes and trucks, etc. The ravens paid no attention to the people and
vice versa. Before eggs were laid, both ravens would frequently fly in to
the nest (usually for a brief visit) whether or not people were in the area.
Another notable thing is that the room where the nest is located is lit up
like a stage overnight. Apparently that is not a problem for the ravens
either.
At this point (3/10) they appear to be incubating (at least a raven is on
the nest day and night as far as we can tell), and it has become hard to see
a raven in the area during the day (compared to not being able to miss them
before incubation started.)
Our sense is that the people have not bothered the ravens and the ravens are
unconcerned about people.
We have been pleased to have this chance to watch these birds as neither of
us has been in an area where we had a chance to observe nesting ravens
before now.
