I was astonished to see a very early Great Egret this morning while
driving along Zachary Taylor Highway (US 522) south of Culpeper. The exact
location was just southeast of #22799 Zachary Taylor Highway and just
southeast of SR 652. The Egret was in a huge cultivated field quite close to
the highway. The map shows a small creek in or near that location, which I
didn?t notice from the car.

A big thanks to Kent and Jason Davis for tipping us off to a swan they
found at the Greenfield wetlands in eastern Charlotte County yesterday
afternoon. Ty Smith and I zipped down there this morning and
immediately heard the swan calling from the back edge of beaver pond
marsh. During our observation, the bird bathed and swam around near the
beaver lodge all while dodging some aggressive Canada Geese.
This is the first Charlotte County record and the third confirmed record
for the southern Piedmont. For those that want to make the journey to this
awesome birding location, be sure to park well off on the side of the road
before reaching the wetland which is located at these coordinates: 37.062,
-78.585. Greenfield Road is gravel and doesn't have much traffic, but
those
that do travel it can go quite fast.

? I heard for at least the third time this month a?Common (Northern)
Raven while doing errands in?Great Falls Village. Today while attempting
to?use an out of service ATM, ATM directed me to one?in Reston near where in
would be in a couple?hours. When I got to North Point Village in Reston?a
Raven was perched and vocal on top of the Giantstore. Two hours and 5 miles
difference so probablya third to go with the pair I heard In GFalls.

We took a walk after dinner this evening and were surprised to hear the
the
peent and twittering flight display of a Woodcock from the relatively
small
wood lot behind our home. The woods are between our row of homes and
lighted tennis and basketball courts. We have mixed feelings about it
presence. While nice to hear it, it is unfortunate that with all the
development in Loudoun this was the best place it could find.

Lot of action on the nest in Arlington. This was around 5pm today. If
you?re in the DC area and you haven?t been, you owe it to yourself. You are
guaranteed to see at least one eagle on the nest for the next few weeks, and
it seems to take only a few minutes before the mate shows up for some action.
This is at Fort Bennett Park, nest hangs over the GW Parkway, 5 minutes from
the Key Bridge.
Today I was close enough that I could hear the birds arguing - did my
best to transcribe the dialog faithfully in the description line underneath
the individual shots. ;)

Chincoteague seemed bleak and bare when I visited this week -- so I
learned that sometimes birds & birders just have to cross state lines.??Here
are some bird photos from the other end of the Eastern Shore.?

Given the weather forecast for the coming days and seeing how it was such
a great day - I wandered in to the ?woodcock meadow? at Huntley Meadows as
the sun was setting.
Thought I might get skunked as the winds began to pick up shortly after
the sun went down and the new weather front was approaching.
But no! First peent came at 6:17 and was followed shortly thereafter by
many more. Have to estimate 7 - 10 birds w multiple display flights. Hit the
trail back to the parking lot at 6;37 and there was one more bird peenting
just a few feet from the macadam?
