For the past three years in a row, we have wood ducks come through the yard and
stop at the feeders ONLY during the first week of April. The first time I had a
wood duck at the feeder was April Fool’s Day and no one believed me!!!

To my surprise last evening, I looked out my office window to see a pair of
Wood Ducks feeding on bird seed in my driveway!!!!! Although I've had a pair
using an owl box by the driveway for the past 2 years, I've never before seen
them on the ground in the driveway feeding on white millet and milo seeds.
I've never heard of this before, and would love to hear if anyone has
observed this species feeding on bird seed, or even read of it anywhere.
Here's a link to a short video online under Blue Ridge Naturalist (the name
of one of my newspaper columns) for those interested in seeing this behavior.
It's amazing what you can see in a nature-friendly garden!
