Birders,
On Saturday, Mary Ann Good, Nicole Hamilton, Jane Yocum, and I birded
farms, woods, fields, and back roads of the beautiful Lincoln 2 block (near
Purcellville, VA) for the VSO foray. We totaled 60 species and found
evidence of breeding for several species. We saw Canada Geese with young;
Eastern Phoebe and Common Grackle on nests; used nests of Barn Swallows;
Tufted Titmouse, Cedar Waxwings, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Orchard Orioles
all feeding young; Brown-headed Cowbirds courting; Great Crested
Flycatchers visiting a possible nest site; and other species holding
territory. Other sightings included a Killdeer, Prairie Warblers, Northern
Parula, Common Yellowthroat, two Green Herons, several Red-shouldered and
Red-tailed Hawks, Scarlet Tanager, Warbling Vireo, Grasshopper Sparrow, and
Chipping Sparrows everywhere.
