Regarding the earlier sighting in Northern Virginia, you may be
referring to one which was found on the Fort Belvoir Christmas Bird
Count, 2005-06.
CBC date was late-late December 2005, and the bird was found in Occoquon
Regional Park, Lorton, (southern Fairfax County); just off the Occoquon
River where it empties into the Potomac. Very far north, and very far
inland, for this species to have wandered. This same bird was
re-located in much the same place by several other birders during the
subsequent week or so.
Bull Run battlefield is upriver on the Occoquon about 15 miles, and then
upriver on the Bull Run about another 10 miles; quite reasonable that if
a B-H Nut wandered to Occoquon in early winter 2005, one might also
wander to Bull Run this winter ....

Brown-headed Nuthatch is pretty common on the southern Piedmont and
Coastal Plain, the easternmost part of the Western Shore, and the
Eastern Shore of Virginia. The farther north and west you go from these
areas the rarer and less regular Brown-headeds become. It would be a
fine record for northern Virginia...but there was one (can't remember
where) up here in the winter several years ago. They seem to wander
(disperse?) somewhat in the late fall/winter. One visited a feeder in
Waynesboro (if I remember correctly) for many years and I was thrilled
to find one in western Louisa County in the late fall in the mid-1970s.
There have been other "out-of-range" records, as well. So...a record on
the battlefield at this time of year would fit into what we know about
the occurrence pattern of this species at this time of year.
Nonetheless, it'd still be a rare and very fine record. I hope someone
can refind it!

Jacob,
I've been seeing Brown-headed Nuthatches in my yard for several years.
It's a very distinctive bird (as someone pointed out to me), and not
only in appearance but in behavior, too. So if you were already
familiar with them then I doubt you made a mistake.

To all,
On my last report I had inserted a sighting stating a brown-headed
nuthatch. I had no idea that they were so rare to this state, for in
North Carolina they were common. I have been talking to an ornithologist
teacher about the sighting and I am now having doubts about it being a
nuthatch. I did not get a long enough look and I did not have enough
time to stay and confirm the sighting. I am sorry for the confusion and
I hope that I did not cause a stir of excitement.
