All,
Birded CBBT bridge (island 1) Saturday morning and then headed up to
Chincoteague. There were not a lot of gulls and those seen were mostly
Ring-billed. I didn't see any rafts of ducks either, but Red-throated Loons and
Scoters were seen in flight and I managed a hat trick with all 3 Scoter species
spotted. Northern Gannets were easily seen and fairly common milling about
near island number 2.
Two Purple Sandpipers were eventually located down from the cafe on the North
side of the island in with some Ruddy Turnstones. A lone Savanah Sparrow was
flitting about the rocks and was the only song bird seen.
Next I headed up to Chincoteague where as luck would have it the service road
was open to the auto traffic. However, stopping, or getting out the vehicle was
not allowed so birding was difficult. Lots of traffic too with folks mainly
interested in Pony watching. Great habitat! Having seen it by car encourages me
to try and walk it sometime in the future.
At the Wildlife loop a flyover of 120 Snow Geese was my only sighting of this
species. I was expecting more of these birds. Ducks seen included Pintail, Am
Widgeon, Black, Mallard, Bufflehead, GW Teal, Shoverlers. Along the beach I
found more Scoters (BBSC and SUSC ) and also Gannets and Common Loons.
Shorebirds seen at the Wildlife loop, the Causeway and the service road were
Dunlins, Black-bellied Plovers, GR Yellowlegs, SB Dowitchers.
