I should have mentioned 2 other notables at Pohick Bay. There were 12 Forster’s
Terns and 7 Bald Eagles of various ages.

Subject: Common Loon at Pohick Bay Reg. Park, Fairfax Co.
I headed down to Meadowood Recreation Area off Guntston Rd. in Lorton this
morning, hoping to find a Northern Harrier that I was told about. I tried
several fields on the property but no Harrier. My next stop was Pohick Bay
Regional Park, hoping for some waterfowl. Ducks were nowhere to be found. A
large raft of American Coots were across the bay near Ft. Belvoir, along with 4
Pied-billed Grebes. However, there was a Common Loon feeding in Pohick Bay,
staying under for long periods and surfacing far from where it submerged,
making it difficult to view. However, it must have had its fill, because it
finally surfaced, preened, and stayed afloat for extended views before I left.
I intended to go over to Mason Neck to look for ducks, but the Frisells showed
up at Pohick and told me they had been there and it was closed today (&
yesterday) for a managed deer hunt. It will be closed again for one more
hunting day on Dec. 13.
