Hi - I put the post below in about a week ago. I received a very nice note
from Sue at fws.gov, which clarified that I had actually walked through
Magothy Bay NAP and into the Bull Tract of ESVNWR. So actually the Bull
Tract is now open to the public and can be accessed from Magothy Bay NAP.
This is a great piece of habitat and I appreciate VA DCR and US FWS working
together to make this publicly accessible.
I have a question if there is a VA-birder who is familiar with this area:
there is a left trail fork just before you leave the pines. If you follow
this, it appears to go back into Magothy Bay NAP and onto an extensive dike
around the east edge of the marsh. My question is is that dike hikeable,
with a path.

Eastern Shore. Magothy Bay Natural Area Preserve is a VA DCR site just
north of the ESVA NWR. It threads the needle between private lands to the
north and the apparently permanently closed-to-the-public northern part of
the NWR. I'd estimate it is at least 1.5 mile walk to the end of the road
(which I did); long but it passes through meadow, pine forest, and salt
marsh habitats.
